Course Content: This three-day course will emphasize the "what to map" aspects of economic geology as applied to minerals exploration and mine mapping. Participants will map part of the Cerro Colorado hydrothermal system, a Paleocene-age porphyry copper deposit, as well as reviewing characteristics of leached capping interpretation, supergene enrichment processes, hydrothermal alteration development (hypogene processes), quantitative structural mapping, and stereonet plotting of structural data.
This course is offered in Spanish and English.

Timing: The course will begin and end in Iquique, Chile. Participants will be picked up at two locations on Sunday, 11 August: 1) at 11:00AM, we will meet at the Iquique [IQQ] airport for bus travel to the Holiday Inn Express in Iquique; the airport is about 25 kilometers south of the city; 2) at 12:30PM, we will meet at the Holiday Inn Express, picking up remaining participants in time for our departure to Mamiña at 1:00PM. We will be travelling by bus to/from Iquique/Mamiña (a two-and-one-half-hour drive) and to/from Mamiña/Cerro Colorado (a ten-minute drive).
The course will end on the afternoon of Wednesday, the 14th of August. We will leave the mine area in time for people to be either dropped off in Iquique at the Holiday Inn Express (first stop) or the airport. There is a LAN-Chile flight to Santiago at 7:45PM for those wishing to return that evening.
Participants will need to make their own flight or ground transportation arrangements to/from Iquique.

Logistics: The course fee includes bus transportation to/from Iquique, as noted above. Lodging as double accommodations for the nights of the 11th-12th-13th (Sunday-Monday-Tuesday) of August in Mamiña are included, as are breakfasts and lunches. Dinners are on one's own, but our host hotel offers good dinners for modest cost. Participants should obtain Chilean pesos (exchange rate about 650 pesos ª US$1) prior to our departure from Iquique, as there are no places to change money conveniently in Mamiña. We will provide mapping sheets, stereonets, and tracing paper. A course field guide is also included with the course fee.

Equipment Checklist: The Cerro Colorado porphyry system is located in northern Chile at an elevation of approximately 2500 meters. Participants should expect cool weather during the night and cool to balmy days, and should prepare accordingly. Please bring the following items with you.

• Hardhat
• Sturdy, leather mine or field boots (required for our mine visit)
  Safety glasses (for rock chips; protective eyewear is required by the mine)
• Long pants
• Long-sleeve shirt
• Windbreaker or jacket
• Field vest (for mapping items)
• Sunscreen
• Lip Balm
• Brunton Compass* (required; probably best to obtain from company, friend)
• Handlens
• Engineer's Scale (metric; we will map at a scale of 1:100 to 1:400)
• Field notebook
• Map board or clipboard for map sheets
• Colored pencils
• Several 2H or 3H pencils, and eraser
• Pocket knife (for hardness testing and pencil sharpening)
• Magnet (optional, but handy)
• Gloves (optional, but handy)
• Rock hammer
• Camera (optional)

* because of travel restrictions on magnetic items for international flights, we can provide very few Brunton Compasses (sorry!).

Contenido del Curso:

Este curso de tres días acentuará los "que hay de mapear" y sus aplicaciones a minas y prospectos mineros. Participantes mapearán un banco en la mina del pórfido cuprífero Cerro Colorado, un sistema de edad Paleoceno. También discutimos aspectos importantes de 1) interpretación de capas lixiviadas, 2) procesos supérgenos y desarollo de zones de enriquecimiento, 3) procesos hidrotermales y desarollo de asociaciones de minerales de alteración, 4) mapeo cuantitativo estructural, y 5) uso de "stereonets" en el tratamiento de datos estructurales.

Se ofrecerá el curso tanto en el Inglés como en el Español

Cuando de ofrece el curso:

El curso empezará y terminará en Iquique. Los participantes pueden encontrar el bús que vamos a utilizar por el curso en dos áreas: 1) en el aeropuerto de Iquique (IQQ) a las 11:00 horas el día domingo, el 11 de Agosto, ó 2) a las 12:30 horas en el Holiday Inn Express en Iquique. Vamos a partir a las 13:00 horas en el bús hacía Mamiña, donde vamos a alojar por los tres días del curso.

Terminará el curso la tarde del día 14 de Agosto, miércoles. Saldríamos de la mina con tiempo disponible para dejar participantes en el Holiday Inn Express (primera parada) ó en el aeropuerto de Iquique. Hay un vuelo de Lan-Chile que parte a las 19:45 horas a Santiago.

Los participantes deben programar sus própios arreglos por transporte aéreo a/de Iquique.

Arreglos Logísticos:

El costo del curso incluye transporte por nuestro bús de/a el aeropuerto de Iquique. Incluye alojamiento tipo doble para noches del 11-12-13 de Agosto en Mamiña (domingo-lunes-martes), además tres desayunos y tres almuerzos en terreno. No incluye alcohól ni la cena, pero el hotél donde estamos alojando tiene un restaurante bueno (y hay otras en los alrededores) y económico. Hay pocos lugares en Mamiña para cambiar dinero, entonces participantes deben traer moneda nacionál al curso para gastos no-incluidos.

Incluido también son las hojas de mapeo, los del "stereonet", y el guía al curso.
